Dan Edelstyn | 2011 | UK | 75’

MWLDAN 2

WELSH PREMIERE | PREMIER GYMRAEG

Here’s a special treat – this wonderful, quirky film is a gorgeous and fascinating vodka-fuelled journey into the heart of the Russian Revolution… and has a very special connection to Cardigan! When Dan Edelstyn discovered the journals of his grandmother Maroussia in the attic of his family home, he was inspired to investigate a truly remarkable human story that leads from a pre-revolutionary Ukraine to the Falls Road in Belfast. Maroussia was a writer, dancer and painter before the Bolshevik revolution rewrote her destiny. And as Dan travels back to his roots, discovering a vodka distillery his ancestors once owned, he wonders if he can best serve his family's legacy – and the depressed village of Dubouviazovka - by re-branding the vodka in the UK. Dan is joined on his quest by Hilary Powell - artist, actor, filmmaker, producer, camera operator and Dan’s life partner. A dazzling mesh of stories and techniques – including archive footage, hilarious montage, animation, false moustaches and cinematic references – combine in this sincere, charming and inventive film that comes fresh from a successful debut at the London Film Festival.

We hope to welcome Dan Edelstyn and Hilary Powell to this screening, and afterwards some Zorokovich 1917 vodka will be available – please enjoy both the movie and vodka esponsibly!
